BE THE BEST TEAM PLAYER YOU CAN BE K. NICHOLLS The working world is not all about the “I”, its really more about the “we”. Even if you are a high achiever, you probably didnt get where you are today without any help. Start considering your team by ensuring that youre giving them as much support as youre getting in return. Good team players are those who: Are reliable Be the person your teammates can count on to deliver quality work, on time, every time. You shouldnt be all about making excuses, you should be all about getting the job done. Contribute Dont just sit back. Share your ideas, your thoughts and your concerns with your team. Collaboration is essential for a teams success and your input is just as valuable and necessary as the next persons. Listens to others Dont try to take over by only pushing your own agenda. Different people bring different strengths to the table, and therefore it is important that every person in the team is given the space to share their opinions. Dont assume things If you have important information that will benefit the team, share it, dont assume they probably already know. Failing to confirm that everyones on the same page is a surefire way to lead your team down the wrong path. Get excited about problem solving You dont pass the buck to someone else, or let others struggle away on their own, you analyse, you ask questions, you consult with various parties, and you brainstorm ideas. Are always willing to help Your work might be done, but maybe theres someone else in your team who is under quite a lot of pressure. Offer your assistance, even if it doesnt quite fit within your job description. That person will be there to help you the next time youre in a bind. Are flexible Management styles change, team members change, goals and timelines change. Change really is inevitable. Learn to be accepting of it, instead of wasting energy fighting against it. Dont take all the credit If your team has done well, dont be the one who acts like you basically did all the hard work yourself. Everyone in the team had a role to play, and the quickest way to alienate yourself is by not acknowledging everyones contribution . Dont point fingers If were very honest with ourselves, failures are usually due to sequence of events, not the sole actions of only one person. Accept defeat, learn from it, and suggest some changes in the way your team operates to ensure that you do better next time. Actively contribute to team morale Dont allow negativity to creep in and derail your teams progress. Setbacks are inevitable, but its how you deal with them that counts. Steer the group into a positive direction by focusing on the good things that have been achieved, and by looking at all the various options available to get things back on track.
