BEST NEW YEARS PRESENT EVER, THOUGH IT MADE ME CRY: My friend Marissa Jaret Winokur teases me about the film we made together, that I have all these lofty goals about wanting women to love themselves, and society to treat them more fairly and to make feminism more inclusive. Her point is, people want to laugh, and the movie is funny, and thats the most important thing. Shes 100% right, both Bruce and I are big believers in the power of comedy to heal us. And yet, in going through my backed up emails, today I found this letter from a young female filmmaker, who was inspired by seeing a Muffin Top premiere in Kansas City to make a short film of her own. Her name is Destiny, and I believe her destiny is to do great things. Here was her note to me, and here is her film. Happy New Years to Everyone! THIS is what a feminist looks like: Dear Cathryn Michon, Hello, my name is Destiny Hanks, one of Amy Cameron’s students. I’ve recently met you at your Movie Premiere for Muffin Top A Love Story on November 17, 2014. Having watched your work, I was inspired to create a video presentation for my Composition and Research Class Project. For the Research Project, each student had to pick a topic that impacts todays society to research, compose a 10 paragraph essay and be able to present an oral presentaion to the class. The topic I researched was Feminism. Being that it was a very broad topic for me to choose, I decided to equal that wide amount of work with a broad visual. Of course, video making/editing is something I love to do and something I want to pursue for a career, so I thought to myself, why don’t I make a video presentation?” So, from there, I created my video presentation on iMovie with included voiceover/ pictures and video clips. This video presentation was then shared to the class, who gave me an awesome response.I also was able to present the video to Ms. Cameron’s (grades 9-12) English classes as well. Nonetheless, I’d like to thank you for creating Muffin Top A Love Story for not only humor but also for a great cause. Meeting you will be an experience I will cherish for a lifetime.
