BLM Conducts First Annual Community Clean-up Day in Lewis Canyon Battle Mountain, Nev. – Lewis Canyon, located in the Shoshone Range, within Lander County, Nev., has been a favorite recreation area for the residents of Battle Mountain for a long time. The canyon is a mixture of private and public ownership and is not a designated recreation site. With the cooperation of the land owners, employees of the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Battle Mountain District conducted a clean-up day on June 18. The BLM started at the mouth of the canyon and worked their way up. They covered three miles on both sides of the road removing as much trash as they could find. Where there were campsites, they paid special attention to broken glass and burned tires, making the campsites not only cleaner but safer. “It was a successful endeavor,” said BLM District Manager Doug Furtado. “Our goal was to give back to our community by making a safer and cleaner environment for the residents of Battle Mountain that recreate in Lewis Canyon and thanks to the hard work of the BLM employees, that goal was accomplished.” The BLM asks all residents to do their part to keep our community and surrounding areas clean and free of trash and litter. BLM employees will join with the community in a second effort to improve the public lands for recreational use during the National Public Lands Day (NPLD) in September.
