BRAINSTORMING - PART 1 Have you ever faced the situation in which you could not come up with any idea to write up an essay or to give a speech? Then, try brainstorming! This is one of the most effective methods in creating and gathering your ideas, from which you have an appropriate approach towards your topic. There are many different techniques of brainstorming, but here, we introduce to you some main techniques. 1/ FREEWRITING: You have already heard about this technique, right? This method permits you to freely follow your flow of thoughts without any concern about spelling, grammar, punctuation, or relevance, which helps you free up your internal critic and allow yourself to write things you might not write if you were being too self-conscious. When you freewrite, you should set a time limit (“I’ll write for 15 minutes!”) or a space limit (“I’ll write until I fill four full notebook pages”). When you finish, read back over your text. There would be some crazy and hilarious thoughts but there also would be little gems, discoveries, and insights which build up your ideas about the topic. 2/ CUBING: This technique sounds strange, but it is particularly fruitful in having a broader awareness of the topic’s complexities. In specific, it enables you to consider your topic from 6 different directions, like 6 sides of a cube. What you need to do is to take a sheet of paper, consider your topic, and respond to these six commands. 1. Describe it. 2. Compare it. 3. Associate it. 4. Analyze it. 5. Apply it. 6. Argue for and against it. This is the end of part one. Wait for the next part, we will introduce you some more useful brainstorming techniques.
