BRIDGWATER CARNIVAL 2014 ‘IN NUMBERS’ Distance wise, it is just over 2 miles from the very first entry to the very last entry in the parade, and it will take 2½ hours to pass any one viewing point. Over 350,000 lights will illuminate the skyline as the carts meander around the streets of Bridgwater. 18 Megawatts of electricity will power the 50 carnival carts taking part in this years carnival procession. Over 2,500 people are involved with the 130 entries in this years event. 400 traffic cones, 150 plastic barriers, 187 road traffic signs, 600 crowd control barriers, 50 road closures and 75 junctions needing signage will be set out by 8 members of the carnival committee using over 1,000 zip ties in readiness for the 2014 carnival. The first are laid at 06:30 hours on carnival day, and the last collected at 04:00 hours the following morning. We will have 45 marshals manning road closure points and involved with traffic duties during the event. 450 collectors will be on the streets on carnival night shaking their 760 collection buckets and are expected to collect over 560,000 coins. 25 charities (including the Bridgwater Guy Fawkes Carnival charity) will benefit from the 2014 Bridgwater Carnival collection. All of the 1,970 grandstand seats were sold three weeks prior to the big day. 47 trade stands will line the procession route on carnival night. 175 people are expected to take part in the squibbing display, 15 minutes after the procession has finished. The squibs are 300mm long by 200mm in circumference and hold approximately 1lb of gunpowder 37 cups and trophies are awarded on carnival night by our 76 judges. 54 coaches / minibuses will be attending Bridgwater Carnival 2014, and includes one coach from the Czech Republic. 29 acts consisting of over 250 people will take part in the daytime entertainment planned for carnival day in the town centre. 50,000 publicity flyers have been sent to motorway service stations, event attractions and tourist information centres throughout the country. 1,926 people like the official Bridgwater Guy Fawkes Carnival Facebook page. 2,607 people follow Bridgwater Carnivals official Twitter account. Since 1 January 2014, 65,655 people have visited our official website (bridgwatercarnival.org.uk), with 28,144 visiting in the last month. 36 companies and organisations are official sponsors of Bridgwater Carnival 2014. 900 low energy bulbs light Bridgwater Carnival’s official Guy Fawkes cart which traditionally leads the procession. 2014 is the 409th anniversary of The Gunpowder Plot. This year 18 local schools are taking part in initiatives organised by Bridgwater Guy Fawkes Carnival Committee, all designed to engage younger people with carnival related activities. 160 children are taking part in the children’s dance parade on carnival day, and 26 Chinese dragons seen in and around the town centre have been decorated by these schools. In the last 4 years Bridgwater Carnival related activities have raised nearly £70,000 for the official Bridgwater Guy Fawkes Carnival charity and other local supported charities. 20 iBeacons will be placed with some of the entries at Bridgwater Carnival 2014 in a pilot to promote and enhance the experience of visitors to the carnival. The technology is already successfully in use at some of Bristols flag ship tourist attractions including The Clifton Suspension Bridge, Bristol Museum and Art Gallery and St Mary Redcliffe Church. Bridgwater Guy Fawkes Carnival Committee has 76 members.
