BRINGING THINGS TO THE LIGHT “When all things are brought - TopicsExpress

BRINGING THINGS TO THE LIGHT “When all things are brought out to the light, then their true nature is clearly revealed”. Eph 5:13 GNB The symbolism of light is very significant. Traffic lights control thousands of vehicles’ movements and help to maintain order on the roads. A spotlight on a stage draws the attention of the audience to just one actor who then takes centre-stage. A light in the darkness can show the way - and also serves as a warning to would-be criminals who prefer to work in the darkness to hide from detection. “In the east the shops in the bazaars are simply little covered enclosures with no windows. Often a person might wish to buy a piece of silk or an article of beaten brass. Before he bought it he would take it out to the street and hold it up to the sun, so that the light might reveal any flaws which happened to be in it. He would only purchase it, if it stood the test of the light” (W. Barclay, The Epistle to the Ephesians, p112). Of course an article might also show up to be flawless and then the “light test” assures the purchaser of its validity. Paul had seen all this happening in the market places of the cities he had visited. He knew that the new Christian converts had to pass the test themselves, but also they had to become the light that showed up the true nature of the surrounding evil. Christians still have the dual function of receiving the light of Christ and of multiplying it around them. It is still important for the believer to evaluate what is happening in order to work out what is wrong and therefore to avoid it. PRAYER THOUGHT Lord, help me to constantly watch for the evil and do the good.
