Back from Captivity Read Ezekiel 28:1 through 30:26 Egypt’s Pharaoh hooked by his once-powerful jaws and dragged ashore, his wealth carried to Babylon, and both arms broken—some of the most strikingly vivid imagery was spoken, not to God’s people, but to their neighboring enemies. An unexpected promise, not to the next-to-fall Judah, but to the once-so-mighty Egypt. “At the end of forty years I will gather the Egyptians from the nations where they were scattered. I will bring them back from captivity and return them to Upper Egypt, the land of their ancestry” (Ezekiel 29:13–14). We are familiar with God’s promise to bring the Jews back to their homeland, so it seems foreign to hear the same promise made to Egypt. Why would God let ten of the twelve tribes disappear but watch over a remnant of Israel’s oldest enemies? Could the Lord actually care for those whom we feel should only experience His judgment? The truth is God harbors genuine love and has real plans for such people. Challenge for Today: What seemingly unredeemable soul do you know? Pray that God will bring him or her home as well.
