Back in 1978 I formed a group with Mark Gaillard called Slim & Trim. Mark is the son of Slim Gaillard who had two hits with Slam Stewart in the late 30’s (Flat Foot Floogy and Cement Mixer) and the former brother-in-law of Marvin Gaye. Mark was tall and slim (Slim) and I had a beard and long hair (Trim; like Curly had no hair). We worked at Marvin Gaye’s studio as second (recording) engineers when we met. We started writing songs together and got a call to be the band in the movie “The Penitentiary” starring Leon Isaac Kennedy and directed by Jamaa Fanaka. We showed up with the band at the UCLA Film School courtyard and played the song “Hot Freeze.” After being in the movie, we finished recording our album and due to creative differences, disbanded a few months later after playing some gigs in San Francisco and Marin County including the famous club “Sweetwater.” Mark sang lead, I played keyboards (I later joined Iron Butterfly and Wild Cherry), my good friend (and recently deceased) Steve “Liberty” Loria on bass (he later joined Spirit), my good friend Jack Willoughby on drums (he later joined Spirit) and my good friend Mauricio Ramirez (from Columbia) on guitar. The song was written sort of tongue and cheek and I made a little slide show video for your entertainment. Enjoy! ~Dean A.
