Prepare to manage troops against terrorists, Ihejirika tells junior commanders As the prestigious Armed Forces Command and Staff College (AFCS), Jaji turned out 129 Junior Commanders for the three services of the Nigerian Armed Forces, the Chief of Army Staff (CAS), Lt. General Azubuike Ihejirika has urged them to be prepared to manage troops in the ongoing fight against terrorism in the country. He said as they were not unaware of the government’s efforts to rid the country of insurgents, they must bring their knowledge of counter terrorism to bear when called upon for such assignment. Ihejirika, who was the guest of honour at the graduation ceremony of the 129 officers and five foreign officers, two civilians from Defence Intelligent Agency (DIA) and Department of State Service (DSS), as well as a para-military officer from Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS), congratulated the 137 students for being fortunate to benefit from counter-revolutionary and anti-terrorism packages. The chief of army staff said: “You are all aware of the current efforts to defeat all forms of terrorism in the country. As you complete your course today, some of you are likely to be involved in the ongoing operations. I implore you to put into practice the knowledge, which you have acquired. You must show leadership by example and provide effective supervision to troops placed under your command. Let me remind you all that in contemporary times, conflicts all over the world are largely intra-state, most of which result in complex emergencies. In this regard, you are fortunate to have benefitted from such packages as the Maneuvers Approach to warfare and its decision-making tool known as the Estimate Process, Peace Support Operations and Disaster Management, Ihejirika said. Addressing the foreign students, Ihejirika said: To our allied students, please note that various forms of internal security and low intensity conflict situations, where you may be called upon to intervene, may spring up from time to time. You must be mindful of these challenges that may confront you and measure up to them in the most professional manner. You must uphold the very highest standard of conduct vis-à-vis character, integrity, excellence, service and teamwork. Earlier in his welcome address, AFCS Commandant, Air Vice Marshal Eko Effiom Osim said the 137 students of Junior Course 75/2013 passed through 20 weeks of intense training and academic activities designed to equip them with appropriate skills to function effectively as Grade 3 Staff Officers and Junior Commanders in their various services and Tri-service establishments. The 137 graduates were made up of 64 Nigerian Army officers, 40 Nigerian Navy officers, 25 Nigerian Air Force officers, two civilians, one each from Defence Intelligence Agency and Department of State Service, one para-military officer of Nigerian Immigration Service and five allied officers, one each from Benin Republic, Cameroon, Liberia, Niger and Togo. sunnewsonline
