Back in 2007, a company with roots in the DJ community (theyll remain nameless) approached me about appearing in an advertisement promoting a product that made it possible for people to seamlessly play music at social gatherings or parties, completely bypassing the need for a real DJ. Think of it as an iPod that operated like a DJ. All you had to do was design a song playlist and this machine would choose mixing points to perform all of the transitions within a playlist. The company called it virtual DJing.... They sent me a script for the commercial, all you gotta do is press this button and..., along with a quote detailing how much income Id earn. Mind you, in 2007 I released Ground Xero with my former crew Ill Insanity. Since promoters couldnt afford to fly us all around the country, pay for hotel, and our performance fee... Id use my own frequent flyer miles or hit up Scion to sponsor travel in order to convince dudes booking me to turn my solo gigs into Ill Insanity shows. Thing is, as a result, we was splitting the money Id make by myself, 3 ways. Lets just say I was struggling financially. We were at the height of the recession, I had an Ill Insanity album to promote and the bills just kept piling on. Id be lying to you if I said I wasnt tempted to be the face of this virtual DJing... product. When you have a mortgage, the bills keep piling and all of the financial responsibility at home falls on your shoulders, youll consider doing a lot of things. But I have integrity so I said NO. Seven years later Im still paying off my mortgage, still keeping up with the bills and my self-respect is in tact.
