Back in my 20s, I started getting occasional gout flare-ups in (of course) my right big toe joint. The pain is something thats hard to describe if you havent had it - its caused by hard crystals forming in your joints, so think of what chunks of coarse ground glass in your joints might feel like, and youre in the ballpark. It would get so bad, Id often think, Yknow, I bet my 12 gauge loaded with #8 bird would take that toe clean off, and not even leave a mark on the wall. Luckily, it never came to that. And mysteriously, I havent had one in 4 or 5 years, which is good. However, this new joy of neuropathy (thanks to my good friend Type 2 diabeeetus) and the burning pain in the soles of BOTH feet now - basically the death screams of thousands of little nerve endings as they shrivel and die, is a new kind of horrible pain. Not quite as intense on a pure 1 to 10 scale of ouch but also harder to deal with in its own way...more dispersed, more flaming and just more....there. The problem is the chainsaw would probably not be as clean a cut as the 12ga to the toe would have been...and I dont own a guillotine. So if anyone has a lightsaber theyd let me borrow for a few hours...I might need that. (Theoretically, I could have a gout flare again, of course...I did nothing at all to make it stop, they just...went away. Same diet, same kidneys as always...so...not really sure why I havent had one in years. If I get one of those at the same time as the feet dipped in lava of this neuropathy, they may need to straight-jacket me for a few days.)
