Bale interested in United move this summer? According to reports over the weekend, in-demand Tottenham Hotspur winger GarethBale has expressed an interest in joining Manchester United. The reigning PFA Player Of The Year is one of the hottest properties in football, and has been linked with the biggest clubs in the world, most notably Real Madrid, over the last year or so. Tottenham’s failure to qualify for the Champions League for the second successive season has heightened speculation he could be on his way this summer. United are seen as favourites to secure his signature, with the Welshman supposedly confiding to close friends his desire to play atOld Trafford, having said nothing about Real Madrid when coveted by them. Spurs chairman Daniel Levy drives a hard bargain, and is known to use the press to force buying clubs into paying the highest possible price. Levy is thought also still to be grieved at the manner in which Dimitar Berbatov left White Hart Lane for Old Trafford in 2009. With this in mind, the fact there has been no (rapid and dismissive) response to these reports, and rumours of a bid from United, can be taken as a positive sign. These reports come days after executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward returned from the pre-season tour in Australia on “urgent transfer business”. David Moyes has made no secret of his intent to bring in top quality players this summer in order to compete with a rejuvenated Chelsea and Manchester City, and it is said he has no set transfer budget to adhere to. A signing such as this would also be a massive statement of intent from Moyes and the board, and help dispel some of the lingering doubts over the future of the club with Sir Alex Ferguson retired. The key in this is likely to be Bale himself who, after some pundits claimed he could be as good as Lionel Messi or a certain Portuguese fellow, undoubtedly wants to prove that and play at the highest possible level, challenging for European and domestic honours every season. Make no mistake however, with Levy’s hardened selling tactics and Tottenham’s reliance on Bale, it will take a huge sum to prise him away from Spurs, expected to be around £60m. Earlier today it was announced that Spurs had signed Belgian winger Nacer Chadli from FC Twente for a fee of around £7 million. Could this be a possible replacement for Gareth Bale this season, or was Andre Villas-Boas just strengthening his team? Watch this space…
