★ Base your domesticity in harmony Harmony is a very common word. Yet, how many of us really know how to live harmoniously? We should know that our primary aim is peace. Serenity sought through penance and meditation gets shattered in a moment of non-vigilance. We should always strive to be alert and be an unswerving optimist who is bold enough to handle even the greatest adversity. When we meet every situation with a cheer of spirit, out home becomes a place of happiness. When we fall prey to challenges and get mentally disturbed, the peace of our entire home dwells in sorrow. And by spreading a sense of unsettlement and fear to all the members of the house, we are, in retrospect, pulling ourselves away from the solution. On one rainy New Year eve, a little girl was dismayed at her family’s continuous arguments over a new cycle. Her brother insisted on having a new bicycle while her parents tried to convince him to use his old one. Mother tried explaining to him that the economy was bad and they can’t possibly get him a new cycle. Her father blamed the mother was spoiling her son. One thing led to another and soon the three of them were exchanging a wordy duel which disturbed the little girl a great deal. She asked herself,” It’s New Year, but why is my family unhappy?” She sat by the window looking for an answer when she saw four old men dashing towards her house to seek shelter from the heavy rain. They introduced themselves as Wealth, Success, Well-being and Harmony! When the girl’s father asked them in, one of the men said, “Sorry sir, according to our rule only one of us can come in. Who do you wish to invite?” While the father wanted Wealth to come in, the brother wanted Success and the mother wished to invite Well-being as each one felt their choice was the most important for the family. The little girl then spoke up “It’s New year’s and harmony is what we need the most.” Her family agreed and invited harmony over, when the other 3 men too walked in. Looking at the surprised look on the father’s face, one of the men said,” If Harmony enters your home, Well-being, Success and Wealth will follow.” All of us have specific aspects of Dharma. If each of us abides by our Dharma, life at home will be harmonious. In reality our domestic life is a preparation for a higher life in a bigger and sublime consciousness. Do not expect misfortune but accept the inevitable in divine dispensation. Surrender timidity and come to the fore front to face the challenges of life, with a happy disposition. Remember that there is nothing worth possessing in this world than peace and harmony. No matter what we are subjected to on a daily basis; be it grief, challenges, depression, if we decide to work in harmony, everything will fall in place and it will be smooth sailing all the way.
