Battling the black arts at the heart of the British state, by Kevin McKenna In todays National newspaper Kevin reflects on how close the Yes campaign came to overcoming the might of the British state and all of its apparatus. He highlights how the yes campaign got much closer than two German, one French and one Russian empire ever did in the history of the Great Britain. Despite the intervention of civil servants; the Queen; and media. Of no surprise to me within his article, although it still disturbed me, was his reference to the book by Seamas Milne called The Enemy Within which provides a wonderful forensic account of the miners dispute in 1984/5. Particularly disturbing was the sleeper agent within the NUM who was working for MI5 and who rose to become one of Scargills lieutenants and played a key part in the destruction of Scargills credibility, the union and ultimately, the industry in the UK. Within the updated version of the book Milne writes: As the allegations unravelled and the court cases and investigations collapsed, glimpses of what in fact lay behind the affair began to emerge: of dirty tricks, agents provocateurs, surveillance operations, political manipulation and diplomatic deception, and the devastating lengths to which the security services were prepared to go in the war against the NUM, both during and after the 1984-85 strike McKenna rightly concludes, The same (and I would say EXACTLY the same) forces waged war against Scottish Independence and IT ISNT OVER YET - NOT BY A LONG WAY. So in finishing, a few things came to mind: 1. Despite this, look how close we came. 2. Remember that the SNP and Scottish Government are also fighting this fight every single day, most of it behind the scenes. 3. Labour are part of this apparatus. 4. Resistance is in the Scottish DNA so we CAN & WILL overcome. As Gandhi said .........
