Be responsible…. A student of final year who was in a frustrated mood contacted his Professor for personal guidance and said “ Sir, I need your guidance, because I am not able to overcome my weaknesses such as low self-esteem, inferiority complex, failure in setting goals, feeling of depression, and inability to achieve progress. I developed these weaknesses because of lack of guidance from my parents, teachers, and friends. They do not help me to overcome these weaknesses. The situation and the persons around me always discourage me. Please let me know, what I am supposed to do in this situation?” The student noticed that the Professor was listening very carefully. The Professor said, “I feel that you must realize that no one else but you are responsible for your own weaknesses. You could not overcome your weaknesses because probably you were not willing to make efforts for the same. Find out whether you have put in sufficient efforts to solve your problems. Your approach and attitude may be responsible for your present condition. You have mentioned your weaknesses. You have not said anything about your strengths. Try to find you are your own strengths. I can help you only when I realize that you are making efforts to solve your problems. As I do not know what efforts you have taken, I am unable to help you, because I help those who help themselves. Meet me when you can say something about your efforts, and when you accept responsibility. !” The student was disappointed because the Professor did not give any assistance, or advice. He was not willing to accept that he was responsible for his own weaknesses. He started pondering over the comments of the Professor and started looking at his own problems with a sense of responsibility. Slowly he recollected many opportunities, which he ignored and lost, many occasions when he ignored the advice given by his parents, teachers, and friends, and his own negative approach, which contributed in developing those weaknesses. He remembered that he spent more time in discussing about his weaknesses than identifying his strengths. He realized that he is far more responsible for nurturing his weaknesses than the persons whom he blamed until now. This introspection changed his approach. He immediately started making efforts by making optimum use of his strength. Soon he was able to overcome his problems. “Could you identify your strengths? What efforts you have made?” asked the Professor during their next meeting. The student replied, “Yes sir. My strength is my ability to introspect. I begin my every effort after introspection and I begin introspection by evaluating the results of my efforts.!” The Professor said, “That’s good. You are on right path. Now you can easily overcome your weaknesses. I am happy to realize that now you may not require my assistance and you can help yourself.” The student thanked the Professor for encouraging him to introspect. (K.M.)
