Ben Reid recommended movie! Philip Seymour Hoffman gives it his all in this bizarre and hugely ambitious movie that is very inventive, oddly funny, and actually really depressing. Directed by writer Charlie Kaufman (Being John Malkovich, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind), Synecdoche, New York was met with polarizing reviews on release. Roger Ebert treasured it as the greatest movie of the past decade. Its motifs like the burning house and the small painting will grab you, but it isnt until a second viewing where you may notice the genius of how quick time passes. The frustrated Hoffman ages throughout the film, something we will never see in real life. Though this is most definitely a challenging movie, and not necessarily my favorite of Hoffmans, I must say that it is likely to be among his most enduring and available to analyze for both acting and film making.
