Bismillahi r-Rahmani r-Rahim What Is Niqab?, Shaykh Muhammad Nazim Al-Haqqani An-Naqshibandi, Sohbat of the 31st of July, 2013. Lefke – Cyprus As-salamu ‘aleykum. O Lovers of Shah-i Mardan, may you have peace. May the peace that is with you pass to us also. mā shā’ Allahu kāna, wa mā lam yashā’ lam yakūn. Welcome here with us, O Shah-i Mardan. Your lovers are in awe of you! Please shed light upon the darkness of our falsehoods. O Shah-i Mardan, as-salamu ‘aleykum. Ya Shah-i Mardan, wa rahmatullahi wa barakātuhu. mā shā’ Allahu kāna, wa mā lam yashā’ lam yakūn. Peace has been forgotten. Security has vanished. Come, O Shah-i Mardan! Please come and speak your mind, so that we might profit from it. There remains no more safety in the world! For what reason? Because there is no peace. To give the greeting of peace [salām] wards off misfortune, it relieves distress and refreshes the heart, and it invigorates our body. Why is that? Peace is from heaven, it is not a worldly invention. Salām-ullahi ‘aleykum, ya hadirun, Allahs peace be upon all those present. May the safety of Allahu Dhu l-Jalal be with us all. Let us take advantage of it. Every atom of our body, may it be revived, refreshed and expanded. Mankind! O Shah-i Mardan! Your lovers are in awe of you. They need to listen. Man is in trouble. The troubles of people nowadays, Shaykh Mehmet Effendi. they are total. They are troubles from which there is no escape. Whoever you see, he will say, I am in trouble. What is missing? I mean, are you fed up with being a human being? Are you upset that you were not created as an animal? Why? We are in trouble, he says. If you are in trouble, go to the ... W.C.! Our trouble is not removed by that, he says. It is a different kind of trouble. You will you do? Ah, I will go and get myself a drink! And what will you drink? Something your Creator has forbidden you. There is no benefit in forbidden things, there is harm in them. Come to us, O Shah-i Mardan. Your Lovers are in awe of you. Let us say: Bismillahi r-Rahmani r-Rahim. How lovely! What an honour! Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar wa li-llahi lhamd. Come, O Shah-i Mardan, the field is yours. We are your adoring friends. We want to listen and receive from you so that our troubles may go away and our hearts may be refreshed. Amin. Welcome to you, O Lovers of Shah-i Mardan. All manner of things happen! What amazing things there are, all kinds of things. What is there that man hasnt got? What is it you are missing? You have nothing to eat? Nothing to wear? Nothing to drink? Is your mind deficient? Are you lacking in power? What are you missing? What are you whining about? You have no right, no right. Yes, man is the most honoured of all created beings. Come to us, O Shah-i Mardan. Speak of the level of human kind. ashraf ul-makhluqāt: The most honoured of created beings. When someone who has reached the level of heaven says Be, it comes into being. Such honour and power is present in man. Eh, we have made all these machines. Your machines will crush your heads. There is our industry. It will be back to haunt you! May it be far from us! Come to us, O Shah-i Mardan. In the old days, everyone had these things, these implements for weaving by hand. What were they called? shikdam shik, shikdam shik [sound of weaving looms ]; those things they had. They made dhikr with them, they did their work with them, and it became a means for knowing oneself. What is the matter with people, Shaykh Mehmet Efendi? Dastur! Please carry on, O Shah-i Mardan! The biggest trouble coming on people is that which shaytan brings upon them. The biggest trouble that befalls people! May he be kept far from us. Come, O Shah-i Mardan. It is when people are far removed from their humanity, when they have no notion of their rank as human beings. They remain far removed from it, and by being far from it, they bring trouble upon themselves. How can I get rid of my trouble? I have money, I have my work. There are my farms, there are my cars. there are my factories, and my gold! But still I am not comfortable, he says. Come to us, O Shah-i Mardan, and give counsel to mankind. The veil of heedlessness hangs over us. May it be lifted. May the veil be lifted, let it be removed. O our Lord! You are the Loveliest of all things lovely, he says, but why is Your face veiled? What is this niqāb, this veil? he says. O our Lord! Man cannot know. He cannot look at himself. Since he cant look at himself, he begins to squint. There is an expression used by those in love: There is no one more beautiful than you. What is that veil on your face? There is such a saying Haji Mehmet Effendi. You are not ugly, so why this veil on your face? You will see, he is hiding it. Man. Man is hiding something. Man.. He is hiding something. When he does not find the thing he has hidden, he grows restless. Your lovely face, your lovely face, What is that veil on your face? They used to say gökçek yüzün, do you know what that is, Mehmet? Your lovely face, wejhi kerimin Beauty of beauties, why do You veil Your face? He is veiled, He is veiled. What man seeks from his Lord is His lovely Countenance, says the poet Yunus. gökçek means the most beautiful of all. Your most beautiful face, what is that veil on Your face? What is that veil covering Your face? Allah has dressed such dignity upon the human countenance! Man is veiled from himself. Could he see himself, he would fall down senseless. Your most lovely face, your face is beautiful, but for what is that veil covering your face? Why do you cover it up? he says. The words of Yunus concern this matter. Your face is most lovely. Your face is of flawless beauty. So why do You cover Your face with that veil? Why are You veiled? So as not to be seen by those unworthy of the sight. So as not to show them what is not lawful for them to see. The veil is because of them, He says. He is mindful of His own self, He is veiled. He is veiled. Allah, Allah! It is Allah Almighty who gave beauty to this face. Among the stories that used to be told there was this one: There once was a lady who went to court and came before the judge. She voiced her complaint, saying: My husband wishes to marry another woman in addition to me. The Qadi told her: The shari‘a law gives him this right. He told that lady not to complain. That veiled one spoke: O Judge! O Qadi! If the shari‘a had allowed me to lift my veil, you would not have given that ruling. You would have ruled that one who possesses such a one as me has no need of seeking another. Man possesses such dignity, such beauty! Your most lovely face. When he says gökçek, he means an indescribable beauty, a loveliness impossible to describe. Thus Yunus is calling: Since Your face is so lovely, why do You wear a veil? He is addressing his Lord. You are the Beauty of all Beauties, and yet You take a veil. Why? he asks. The veil is to shield against the gaze of the unqualified, those who cannot understand what it conceals. That is why when people are displaying themselves they become ugly. Allah Almighty created His Beloved the most beautiful of all beauties. He commanded him to veil himself. The prophets are veiled. All of them are veiled, Shaykh Mehmet Efendi. (..growling sound..) How is that? Ok? Eh, thats how it is. What sense is there in showing oneself to animals? No! Since Your face is so lovely, Your face is the loveliest of lovelies, for what do You cover it with a veil? Why do You cover Yourself? Why do You veil Yourself? You cannot understand this Beauty. This is a concealed matter, He says. O our Lord! Our Subhān, our Sultān! The beauty You have given Your Beloved turns the whole universe upside down. Most of the prophets are veiled, niqāb, they are veiled. You cannot look at them. O Glorious Prophet! O Prophet, most beautiful of beauties! Our Master, our Sultan, he is veiled. You cannot look at his face. For his face is beautiful beyond description. Since your face is so lovely, why do you veil it from sight? Why should man veil himself? Insān - the sacred human being! Allah Almighty did not appear to him directly, but with a veil. There is a veil. Humans are not aware of the beauties of heaven. They busy themselves with the beauty of animals here on earth. Since Your face is so lovely, as Your face is of awesome, indescribable Beauty, for what does this veil cover Your face? It is not lawful. Therefore, nine of ten parts of beauty were given to women. One part is given to men. The beauty of men is of a different kind. Cover up, He says. Do not display yourselves, O you ladies! It is from your Lord, He gave you such beauty, this is from your mother Eve. Your mother Eve came down to earth in a veil. She was covered in a veil. When in paradise this veil was lifted, the Prophet Adam was baffled and stunned. Your face is so lovely, for what is this veil? Our Lord Almighty created us to be lovely of face. There is no one who will give us such beauty. O you people! You are beautiful and you also possess nobility, but your current state leaves you no beauty. It also leaves you no nobility. Come! Come to follow the heavenly command! All prophets were veiled. They were covered. They had dignity. They were all majestic, dignified. No one could gaze at our Holy Prophet. O glorious Messenger! O glorious Messenger! You could not look our Holy Prophet in the face in this way, Aman, ya Rabbi! How beautiful! You could not have endured it. You would have fallen down and died. Come, O Shah-i Mardan! Speak to us of the beauty of mankind. But Allah, Jalla wa ‘Ala, wanted man whom He had created with such a degree of beauty to live like a human being. It was the devil who took away from their faces the beauty given to people! When the soul descends from the heavens, it still carries this beauty, a child has it still. Slowly it grows up and develops. Conceal this beauty, he says. This is what is meant by the old expression: the evil eye. Dont let it touch you. A child is born with heavenly beauty. Dont go out in the streets! Do not show your lovely face! O ladies! You are lovely, you have been created with beauty. But your beauty is reserved for those who are lawful to you. Not for anyone you just happen to meet! Shame on you! May the devils who nowadays rob the women of everything and make them jaded and tasteless be kept far away from us! Beauty was sent down from the heavens, from paradise. You must look after that beauty. For Your face is most lovely, says the poet Yunus Since Your face is so lovely, what is this veil on Your face? There is no one more beautiful than You, but what is this veil? This veil is the cover that Allah Almighty gives to His servants until He has given him all he needs of His own Beauty. Were He to lift it, no man would remain on earth. He would forget everything, Allah, Allah. Allah Allah, Subhan Allah, Sultan Allah. Come, O Shah-i Mardan. Since Your face is so lovely, what is this veil on Your face? How lovely are Yunus words! Your face is beautiful, why do you keep it covered? What is this veil on your face? What is this cover? It is not for free to regard that beauty. It is not shown to those who are yet of animal nature. Great beauty, heavenly beauty, is not shown to those who cannot comprehend it. Therefore, women are not to be seen by men who are not lawful to them. They will take something from them, they take away their light. Your fair countenance. What is that veil on your face? All the angels are also veiled. O people living today! Let go of your savagery! Search for beauty, your true beauty! Search for the beauty that was given to you. Do not chase after the droppings of this world. It has not the value of your beauty. This whole world, all of it, is lower than dung. Look after yourselves, he says. O ladies! O ladies! Dont display yourselves! If you show yourself, your beauty will be taken away and all that remains with you is a false display. Do not show yourself! Do not show yourself off! Because with his evil eyes shaytan will make you ugly. O our Lord, our Sultan, our Subhan. Since Your face is so lovely, what is that veil on Your face? As Your face is so beautiful, for what do You veil it? Why do You not show it? Therefore people, women are ordered to veil themselves, Do not show yourselves, he says. Cover with a veil. The angels in the heavens are veiled. The prophets veil their faces, it is not possible to look at them. You too, O mankind! Do you set yourself apart! Do not set yourself apart from us, thinking you are a different creature; that there is an exception - let us see, let us show. Thats it. There is a veil of beauty given to your face. Hide it! For your face is so lovely. These are the words of Yunus. Your face is lovely, why is there a veil upon it? What is this covering? No one could look the prophets in the face. No one was able to look at our Holy Prophet! No one could look at him. Allahu akbar! Beauty, it cannot be weighed with a pair of scales. It is a Divine gift. Beauty. Preserve your beauty, he says. Because the people of this age are not able to distinguish between beauty and ugliness, they are becoming uglier. They say: Lets get dressed up, but they only become uglier. O ladies! Keep yourselves! When you keep yourselves, you will preserve the beauty that is yours. If you display yourself, that beauty leaves you, shaytan steals it from you. Dont let him do that! When a corpse comes to be washed, the lights of its beauty will appear on a persons face. Your Haji Anne - we cannot look, but they look at it. O my Lord! Against the evil of the devil which disfigures us You have merciless angels. A single one of them will take care of all the deeds of the devil. However, what is cheap is cheap! What is precious is precious! The beauty of mankind is precious. Do not make it into something cheap! The beauty of mankind is veiled. That is why He says: Cover yourselves. Allah, Allah, Allah. Allah, Allah, Allah. May He grant us strength, too. Allah Almighty has given to everything, to every creature its own kind of beauty. The angels do not possess the beauty given to mankind. Preserve your beauty. O our Lord, You know best! You know perfectly about our condition. Since Your face is so lovely, what is this veil on Your face? It is the poet Yunus asking this question: Your face is so lovely, why the veil? The veil, the veil preserves the value of mankind. When he lifts it, he becomes ugly, but when he keeps veiled, he becomes beautiful. This is true for men and for women. Know your own value! The one who is beautiful does not fall ill. Most diseases, Shaykh Mehmet Efendi, are caused by the microbes of the evil eye. The world is filled with hospitals, for all those ill people. Why? The looks from poisoned eyes affect both men and women, and they fall ill. No drug can effect a cure, nor can any surgery. A quality is dressed upon him, which has no remedy. What he puts on will not suit him, whatever he wears cannot be beautiful. Whatever he puts on, he will not recover his former state. There is nothing so harmful to man as the influence of the evil eye. O ladies, do not show yourselves! Do not open up! The gazing of one woman upon another is even worse than that of a man upon a woman. Keep hidden the beauty you were given. Your Lord has granted it to you as a gift. Preserve your own beauty. Keep it for those who are lawful to you. Do not distribute it all round. You must understand, the Prophet ‘Isa grew annoyed and called to the women who wore no head covering. He said to them: Do not go about like that! Preserve the beauty you were given from evil glances. The Prophet ‘Isa did not say: Uncover! Why dont you say this, O Pope? Why do you not teach this to the nations of mankind? Our Holy Prophet is a teacher for all. Nowadays there is no one left to teach what our Prophet taught. People have grown ugly. Outwardly they have become ugly, and their characters are ugly too. Their moral values are failing. Men no longer possess dignity, and nothing remains of womens beauty, as mens perfection is also lost. The whole trouble lies in that. O our Lord, You are Subhan, You are Sultan! Come to us, O Shah-i Mardan! May your words be the remedy for our problem. O Lovers of Shah-i Mardan! Peace be upon you. May all your affairs meet with success. Al-Fatiha.
