Bison too strong for Steeldogs After Thursday night’s last gasp winner in Manchester the Bradfield Brewery Sheffield Steeldogs set off on their travels again. This time making the long trip down to Basingstoke, for their first encounter with the Bison. Craig Elliott came back into the line-up, but Jeff Legue and Callum Pattison were unable to ice. Dalibor Sedlar and Dean Skinns were the starting net minders. The first ten minutes of the game saw penalties coming in for both teams and it was Basingstoke who drew first blood on with a power play goal by Joe Rand. 2 minutes later at 12:02 The Bison added to their tally, that man Rand again on hand to tip the puck into the net from a Vantroba shot. Basingstoke continued their offence and Sedlar and his defence were made to work hard to keep the puck from ending up in the back of the net. But on 16:07 Karpov scored to make it 3-0. Korhon had a late chance but couldn’t get the Steeldogs on the board as the first period finished. The Bison made a quick start to the 2nd period and again Sedlar was tested. On 27:33 the Bison took a 4 goal lead, the goal scored by Wales. Payette called a timeout at this point to try and give orders to change the game. There was more pressure after the timeout from Basingstoke but the Steeldogs chiselled their way back into the game. Tom Squires had two attempts, one was saved by Skinns, the next beat the net minder and found the net, Hirst and Korhon assisted on the goal. The Steeldogs began to have a few more chances, Morgan having a shot tipped goal wards by Squires but Skinns again made the save. Korhon received a penalty with seconds to go in the period; the Steeldogs would start the final period a man down. End of the 2nd period score 4-1. The 3rd period saw more penalties given to both teams, Tom Barry receiving a misconduct form the bench. On 50:29 Korhon was in the right place to score the 2nd goal of the game for the Steeldogs. Again Skinns had made a save prior to the goal, Morgan and Squires credited with assists on this one. Hirst got the bit between his teeth and had 2 chances saved by the Bison net minder. On 56:07 Basingstoke struck for a 5th time, Joe Rand scoring his hat-trick goal. Just over a minute later Korhon was Jonny on the spot and scored his 2nd of the game, assisted Tim Smith and Cam Brownley. At 5-3 down, Sedlar was taken out of the game in favour of the extra skater but it was Basingstoke who had chances to score one more goal with a miss on the empty net and a shot that hit the pipe. No last hurrah tonight for the Sheffield boys, the game ended with a 5-3 score-line in favour of the Basingstoke Bison. Man of the Match for Basingstoke was Joe Rand and for Sheffield went to Tom Squires, who had been a danger throughout the game. The Bradfield Brewery Sheffield Steeldogs return to The Pound on Sunday. 5:30pm face off against the Solway Sharks. Coach Payette has promised an all British line up so come and support the Brit Pack. The Academy boys are playing in a 4:30 face off on the other ice pad, so why not come and cheer on both teams tomorrow.
