Black History Myth 4/5/6 (taking 2 days off) Black Peoples Hair Doesnt Grow/ All Black Women Who Have Short Hair is By Choice/All Black Women Wear Weave Growing up I heard a lot of misconceptions about black hair that always made me wonder.... Is there a book that you all read this from? Hair growth is genetic, and while the average hair growth is about 1/4-1/2 a month, some of those things are environmental as well, for instance, your hair grows more in the summer months (check you out fly ass Floridians). To address the first part, (no pun intended) black hair coils... If you see someone with their real hair that is straight 98% of the time that is from a chemical process or heat. If you hair grows out curly of course it is going to appear shorter (just think of the old house phone cord, whatever happened to house phones anyway?) Meanwhile black hair doesnt faire the best with chemical processing or heat, and putting them both together is kind of disastrous for most hair. If youve ever seen a little black girl with big curl puffs or a grown woman with an Afro, 98% of the time its their hair. Which obviously disproves that our hair cant grow. My mother has longer thicker hair than I see on most women of any race, and sat on her hair as a kid because it was kept so long, but then again she is half chia pet (we just add water). My hair was a fair length when I cut it off all three times and guess what, its growing and grew back, those cuts were a CHOICE (ok maybe not the one that resulted from my roommate taking my hair to a honey color, but the other two for sure). I know plenty of black women who go short on purpose. When I was little I had very long hair and my mother would spend hours braiding (yes hours)it, it was rough out in them streets. Even in its natural state and braided it was still halfway down my back. Henry A., Fred H., Albert S-J (Yes I called names, but Im petty like that) made fun of me everyday its not fair, its not fair, give the horses back their hair). But there was no weave at all, and it infuriated me and I have been scarred away from weave ever since. My mother has never had a weave and I know plenty of friends with long and short hair who have stayed away from the trend. Personally Im not really a fan of the look, but hey, whatever. So there you have it, our hair DOES grow, just because its short doesnt mean it isnt on purpose and just because its long doesnt mean its a weave.
