Brave Sheeba Survived Doc’s dire Predictions Agencies, Mar 06|14 Bangalore: Rajapandian Koil Pichai was carrying Sheeba and waiting for us at the front door of his cramped, two-room house in New Byappanahalli. The door opens to the road and parked outside the house is a pushcart, the only lifeline to the family. Pichai is a vegetable vendor. He lost his wife Abela after she succumbed to liver cancer in 2008. Twenty-eight-year-old Sheeba is his eldest daughter, who was diagnosed with rickets at the age of two. (Rickets is a disease caused by Vitamin D deficiency that makes the bone weak.) Sheeba is just two-feet tall and is extremely shy. Frequent wheezing concerns have slowed down her speech and at times she is seen struggling for breath. Her father says that she is the ‘lucky girl’ in the family. Hearing this, Sheeba bursts into laughter that resembles a two-year-old. “It was a normal delivery at the Chinmaya Mission Hospital and she was perfectly okay for a year. She had lots of hair then and was very playful. Her physical growth (milestones) in an year was as perfect. But then, the problem began when she was making attempts to walk,” says Pichai. He had lost his first child Pooja, while she was just over three years.
