Breaking news south Florida! Monroe County is actually planning (without any state or federal approval) to release genetically modified mosquitos into the Keys to help create future sterile mosquito population & prevent mosquito carried diseases! My first thought was, well Id love that! I hate mosquitos! Then I listen to this news piece. They will be using mosquitos with inserted genes from E. coli bacteria and Herpes Simplex virus. Although the British manufacturer claims it unlikely that these genes can be transferred to other animals, apparently it is a possibility if the mosquitos or the mosquito larva are eaten by another animal. (hello! dont other insects, fish, frogs, lizards, birds, etc!! eat mosquito larvae?!?) Similar mosquito experiments have been released into 2 other countrys environments without previous testing & without successfully deterring their mosquito population to prevent the spread of mosquito born diseases.
