Brown and Hurley getting set for the Paccar MX engine By Steve Skinner | July 25, 2013 Australia’s largest and oldest Kenworth dealer is gearing up for the introduction of the Paccar MX engine into Australian models. Last year Brown and Hurley set up a group training facility at its Yatala dealership, between Brisbane and the Gold Coast, featuring MX, Cummins and Caterpillar engines. This year head trainer Paul Hill has been a regular visitor to the DAF training centre in Europe, ahead of the introduction of the Paccar MX 13-litre engine into Kenworth trucks. No date has been publicly set yet for the introduction. The MX has been in DAF trucks in Australia for several years, ranging in output from 265kW (360hp) to 375kW (510hp). “It’s been a great product so we’re looking forward to getting that in Kenworths,” Brown and Hurley Managing Director Rob Brown says. “The world’s really a 13-litre market. There are virtually no 15-litre engines in Europe, they’re nearly all 13-litre or less, and the United States is certainly heading that way. They only carry 38 tonnes, so 13 litres is fine. “And don’t forget that the engines are getting more and more power and torque out of a certain displacement now. “So engine size will in fact come back a little. We have seen it in cars – a 2-litre diesel engine can have pretty good stick these days.” However Brown adds that while the MX will be fine for lighter weight B-doubles, for example, when it comes to Australia’s really big applications such as full-weight B-doubles and road trains “the 15-litre engine is really where we need to be”. To that end he points out that the new selective catalytic reduction (SCR) based Cummins is starting to come through for production. Brown says it means the Brown and Hurley dealerships can offer SCR and exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) alternatives from Cummins.
