Buyer beware - if you are looking for a service dog, do your homework. There are trainers here in SD who claim they are service dog trainers and are selling service dogs. Remember a well-trained service dog starts at the very beginning when it gets selected for temperament and abilities, whether it comes from a breeder as a puppy or a rescue. It will be well socialized to a variety of people, animals, situations etc. It should be calm in public and be focused on its job for the owner, not on its environment. A service dog by American Disabilities Act is also trained for a specific task(s) whether it is for mobility assistance, hearing, guide for blind, seizure alert dog, pyschiatric service dog for someone with panic disorders etc. Training a service dog for specific tasks is not as easy as people think it is. The dog also needs to be well-matched with its partner to make sure they can work together as a team. Check out this very reliable organization for what they look for in a service dog candidate from a shelter or rescue. possibilitydogs.org/index.php?id=8 So if you are interested in getting a service dog, check out the place you are looking at, check out the trainers and training program, how do they match owners to dogs, etc. I can help evaluate places or programs as I do have contacts in the service dog world.
