By Jeannie Stewart Because today I dont have the words...so thankful for my husband, Ben, who does. We appreciate the love and prayers you have already given more than you know. Someday Today, March 20, is our son Toby’s first birthday. Words cannot express how much we miss him. Our hearts still ache, and our arms still feel empty. That will not change for a very long time, but we are continuously trying to move forward with life, onward with responsibilities, and upward with our perspective. Toby weighed 8 pounds and 7 ounces and was 20 ¾ inches tall at birth on this day last year. I’m sure plenty of other babies fit that description, but there has never been, nor will there ever be, another soul like Toby’s. We may not have been able to hold him long, but we know how precious and unique He is. He, like our other children, Haley, Courtney, and Brady, is irreplaceable because he bears the image of his Creator. Every human soul bears that image. We try to imagine what Toby might look like today, but that vision is so inadequate. We long to see and hold the real thing. And we will…Someday. Someday…is a difficult concept, and it can even be dangerous for some. Some people say, “I’ll get around to making a change in my life someday. I’ll accept Christ someday after I’ve had my fun.” It is dangerous because you might not ever get around to it. Someday is not dangerous for us. It is the promised prize. Our eternity is secure because we’ve placed our trust and faith in Christ, and so Someday is something we are banking on. Our challenge is whether or not we will wait patiently for Someday. People occasionally ask us how we are. To be honest, I don’t know how to answer that question. That doesn’t mean I don’t want you to ask it because your questions reveal your concern. It’s just that my answer depends on the moment. It depends on the distraction or lack thereof at the moment. Most importantly, it depends on the term of our perspective at that very moment. If the perspective is temporal, then we are miserable. If the perspective is eternal and focused on the faith and hope that we know to be real, then we’re doing just fine because our eyes are fixed on the unseen (2 Corinthians 4:18)…our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and our son who are both waiting for us to join them Someday. Jeannie recently read the following quote in a book called When Life Is Hard by James MacDonald. It very accurately captures the challenge we face. Will you wait on Him by faith until the darkness becomes light? Will you wait? If you say, Im not seeing it right now, then you get an A for honesty. But do you believe God is in control? Do you believe that He is good? Are you willing to wait by faith until you see His goodness? Because you will see it. Now or later- you will see the goodness of the Lord. Psalms 27:13 has meant so much to me: I would have despaired unless I had believed that I would see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. My trial would have overwhelmed me, the Psalmist said, unless I had believed. But I do believe it. I believe that I will see the goodness of the Lord and not just in heaven but in the land of the living-right here on this earth. While Im drawing breath in these lungs, I will be able to sum up all that has happened, and I will say, somehow in it God has shown his goodness. We couldn’t agree more. We know we will see the goodness of the Lord. Our trials would overwhelm us if we were to cease believing. Somehow God will show His goodness. We cannot thank you enough for your past, present, and future prayers for our family. You already know that the following passage explains how we continue to hold our heads up day after day. Lamentations 3:21-26 says. But this I call to mind, and therefore I have hope: The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. “The Lord is my portion,” says my soul, “therefore I will hope in him.” The Lord is good to those who wait for him, to the soul who seeks him. It is good that one should wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord. We are waiting quietly for the salvation of the Lord. We are waiting patiently for Someday.
