By this we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before Him. For if our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart, and knows all things. Beloved, if our heart does not condemn us, we have confidence toward God. (1 John 3:19-21) Dear God, as I begin this new day, I want to praise You especially for the assurance that when my heart condemns me, You are greater than my heart. You know that sometimes I begin a day with my heart in reverse. It wants to revisit some mistake of the day before and incriminates me with reminders that I’m not free to enjoy a new day. Then You invade my heart with the conviction that if there is anything to forgive, You have forgiven it and if there is any trace of self-condemnation left, You will cleanse it. You don’t want me to play god by holding myself captive to a bad mood when you have cleansed the slate. You alone have the right to judge. Now Lord, help me to claim that You have and will continue to overcome my perfectionist heart all through this day. When good things happen I want to praise You, when difficult things happen I want to trust You, when failures occur I want to accept both Your judgment and absolution. Today I will bless You for Your grace rather than be a brooder over my goofs. Amen!
