CARTOON RENKU Im certain that many of you have heard of renku ( 連句) a Japanese form of collaborative liked verse poetry, an outgrowth of ushin renga or a much more orthodox collaborative style of linked verse. At renku gatherings, or even in some cases via a chain letter of sorts, poets take turns providing added verses. Well, recently Aoi became involved in a group which does something similar to renku, only with drawings. The group, mostly comprised of baa and jii, gather together somewhere, perhaps a cafe, and one person does a quick drawing or sketch and then passes it to the next person in line. Each subsequent member either creates a new drawing based on the story contained in the previous drawing, or makes an addition to the previous sketch. In this way, and depending on the changes made, the story continues on, but perhaps in the most unexpected ways. The same process can be done on the internet. With each drawing, the story takes on a fresh aspect as it continues on indefinitely; indeed, in many cases there is no end at all: the story just goes on and on. There is no set plot, no script - everything is spur-of-the-moment improvisation. Ive included some sketches to illustrate the principle. The first two sketches were by Aoi; kind of a happy go lucky, cute story about the harvest moon. In the third sketch, I simply added red eyes and two fangs to one of the bunnies. The next sketch took on a completely different direction from the beginning, as dark clouds suddenly move in and begin to cover the moon. If it sounds like fun, you might want to try it some evening with a group of friends or a group of internet friends. Also, with winter coming soon, which means that the kids are likely to be indoors a lot more, its a great game to play with the kids.
