CELEBRATING HERITAGE MONTH By: T. Ramokhabi Photos: J.Khohlokoane Heritage is the variety of inherited traditions, monuments, objects, and culture. It includes, but is much more than preserving, excavating, displaying, or restoring a collection of old things. On this month we recognise aspects of South African culture, creative expression such as music and performances, historical inheritance, language, the food as well as the popular memory. In celebrating this significant month the ‘Likoankoetla Cultural Group’ in Zwelethemba held its second monthly cultural stockvel on the 6 September 2014. About one hundred members of the cultural group attended the event. Cultural group members clad in colorful Basotho traditional blankets paraded in Zwelethemba before the start of the event. A new flag of the group was officially unveiled. In delivering his speech Mr. Khotso Mamakhala one of the Basotho elders in the community, highlighted the importance of showcasing Sesotho culture and providing education about heritage. He says “This month provides an important opportunity for Basotho of all ages and backgrounds to demonstrate the richness of their culture”. The event is the contemporary display of the richness, diversity, and vibrancy of Basotho culture, he said. After the speeches were delivered traditional food was served and happy members sang and dance happily to traditional songs.
