CHAPTER 12 Imagine, they call your mother all the way to your school to tell her that your performance has been noteworthy and the first she says when she gets there is what has she done now?. Well, thats my mother for you, always thinking the worst of me. Ive always wondered what I did for her to think Im a monster. At times I felt like maybe she did not love me enough to treat me like her daughter but at most times I blamed myself for not making her love me enough. What amazes me is that through it all, Ive always loved her and gotten used to her, so sometimes her comments did not bother me at all. You try so hard to please someone and everything you do just tend to make things worse. Mom never saw any good in anything that I did. Well I just gave up on trying to please her and the year became as tough as she had declared. During the year there was an organization which came to our school and asked learners to prepare business plans for a competition that was going to take place. my friend and I paired together and compiled a business plan. One day, as I was preparing the business plan, I asked my mum for airtime money so I could call my friend regarding it. she gave me money, and I went to buy airtime. I did not take even five minutes outside, but when I got back my mum started yelling at me asking where I was. I did not even know what to say, or do because really I had told her. I just kept quiet and carried on with my business plan. I was wearing a blue jean and a white vest, and as I was doing my assignment I heard someone pulling me with my hair. When I tried turning around I actually realized that it was my mother. She pulled me from the couch and pushed me to the floor. She started hitting me, and my sister was just watching me cry. She beat me so hard that she even tore the jean and the vest apart. She told me not to eat her food and I should not sleep in her house. I crawled outside and slept on the verandah. I was woken up by my step dad who was working a night shift. He asked me what happened and I explained everything to him. He tried talking to my mum, but she made it clear that no one will teach her on how to treat her kids or discipline them. I woke up the following day and prepared for class, I did not eat, and I did not ask for transport money. Luckily my step dad knew that I was not going to get any, so he gave me R20. I finally got to school and sat in my usual corner, did my homework and did a little bit of studying. Classes began as usual, but I could not participate as I usually did, and my teacher could see that. After class she called me to her office. She and her colleagues sat me down, and asked me what was happening. I told them everything, starting with what my mom said at the beginning of the year. They made me realize that my mum and sister are threatened by my capabilities and strengths. They told me not to let them affect my school work. After school, I went to my aunts place, I told her not to tell my mum where I was. I wanted to see if she would go to bed without knowing where I was, indeed she did. I woke up the following day, and went to school. I got to school two hours before class and studied. At seven oclock, my mother came to school and, she told me that we were going to the principals office. When we got there my mum told the principal how disrespectful I was, and she said something I did expect; she said that I abuse my sister. I mean like seriously, my sister is six years older than me, how is it possible for me to abuse her? She said I never do the house chores and other duties at home. She said bad things about me, and as usual, principals always believe whatever parents say. My principal believed her and he started telling about how disappointed he was. My mother continued, by saying that she had been through so much because of me. She said I have been stressing her out and I have not been respecting her enough as a mother, and she said she could not take it any longer. She therefore told the principal that she was going to disown me at the police station. the principal had nothing to say, he just told her that if that was what she wanted then he could not stop her. As we were about to leave for the police station, I saw one of the teachers whom I spoke to regarding this matter. I ran to her and told her that mum was at the office, she decided to come. She then told the principal everything that I told him everything that I had told her. The tables turned around, the principal told my mum that she should take me and treat me like her own daughter or else they will have to involve social workers. After all that, my mum agreed to the terms which she was given. as she was leaving she gave me R20 for lunch. But I knew that I could not spend it all as she will demand for it when I get home. I want to class, and lessons took place normally and I participated like the old days. During lunch I reflected o everything that has been happening. If there was one thing that I had not thought of, was what was waiting for me at home. When I got home I found my mum waiting for me with a belt and my suitcases. She told me to go stay with my teacher as I go around telling people about my problems. I just stood there and did not know what to say or do. It just came as a surprise. If there was one thing, I did not know was my mums expectation. When she talks to me, and I keep quiet she complains, when I answer back Im disrespectful. She started beating me for not answering. She said she wanted me to go back and till my teachers again.
