CHARITYS CHARITY UPDATE: There are big dogs, and then there are BIG DOGS. Marmaduke came to the Santa Maria Animal Center last August as one gigantic hot mess. An innocent victim of abusive neglect, emaciated, weak and wobbly, disfigured with massive, bleeding compression sores, skin allergies and in debilitating arthritic pain, this senior Great Dane was refused by the breed rescues. Rendered unadoptable and therefore a hospice candidate, the SBCACF along with a willing hospice volunteer (me!), agreed to take him on. Charitys Charity, in honor of the late, great Charity, is now helping support the big needs of this great big dog with a ginormous will to live, love and be loved. Two months into his rescue and recovery program, Marmaduke (aka Big Dog) has already put on weight and muscle. With proper nutrition, frequent baths and rinses, multiple supplements and vitamins, Marmadukes skin issues are subsiding, he is moving freer, faster and getting back his Great Big Happy! He goes on uphill walks, plays ball, rolls over and even jumps on the couch; before he could barely walk without stumbling. However, Marmaduke still requires surgeries to remove the masses that remain irritated and bleeding. He also needs a full dental with tooth removal to decrease infections and inflammation. To help keep his joints flexible and arthritis pain manageable, a shelf full of supplements and medications is on the monthly tab. Estimated to be about 6 years old, Marmaduke, if given the chance, could feasibly live 2 or more years in relative comfort. The costs to create this future could easily surpass a couple thousand dollars. The SBCACF and his new but forever family are beseeching the public, through Charitys Charity, to give him this chance. We cannot change what created his deplorable condition and what shattered his humongous heart, but every small donation can make a very big difference for this Very. Big. Dog. Thanks for caring and sharing!
