COMMUNITY EVENT! Please share. Resolve to Save a Life! On Monday, January 5th, the Greenup County Health Department will be hosting a community blood drive from 12:30PM until 6:00PM in the Health Education Center. With blood supplies remaining at critical levels, all blood types are needed. Whole blood and double red blood donations will be accepted. The American Red Cross and the Greenup County Health Department are encouraging donors to make a lifesaving New Year’s resolution by donating blood. Cassie Mace, event organizer, stated, “The Christmas and New Year holiday period can be a challenging time for the Red Cross to collect enough blood for those who desperately need it. Donation schedules are easily disrupted this time of year due to holiday activities, school vacations and family travel, and winter weather.” The Red Cross asks everyone that if they miss a chance to donate, please reschedule when they can. In the grand scheme of things it’s about being a small part of something very big. Giving blood costs nothing but time and the gift itself is priceless, stated Mace. Tips for blood donors include eating a healthy meal, drinking lots of water, and avoiding caffeinated drinks prior to the donation appointment. Donors must be a minimum of 17 years-old, weigh at least 110 pounds, and feel well prior to giving blood. A photo identification or American Red Cross donor card is required. Appointments are not necessary; walk-ins are always welcome. If you would like to make an appointment, however, please download the American Red Cross Blood Donor App, visit redcrossblood.org , call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-722-2767) or contact Cassie Mace of the Greenup County Health Department at 606-473-9838.
