COPE IS CALLING FOR A REVIEW OF THE “BLUE LIGHT” POLICY FOR POLITICIANS & METRO COPS The Congress of the People noted yet another series of blue-light abuses by ANC politicians and Metro Police cops this past week. A group of Johannesburg Metro Police officers are being investigated after they illegally escorted one of President Robert Mugabe’s enforcers to Beit Bridge in an unmarked blue light cavalcade. In another incident on Wednesday night, a serious road accident involving a MEC from Limpopo was caused after her driver skipped a red traffic light in the city of Polokwane. It is alleged that Rosina Semenya, Limpopo MEC for Agriculture was running away from the scene of the crime after her Mercedes Benz crashed into another vehicle. Every day millions of South Africans from all walks of life attend meetings and other engagements travelling there by car. What makes politicians of the African National Congress so special that they need blue lights and sirens to get to their destinations, polluting our roads in the process? In November 2011, a driver for former Gauteng housing MEC, Humphrey Mmemezi skipped a red traffic light in Johannesburg causing a matric pupil, Thomas Ferreira, to end up in a coma for more than 3 weeks and to undergo intensive rehabilitation therapy. In Limpopo and some other provinces, several mayors and even speakers of small town municipalities view themselves to be so much more important than other road users, fitting their vehicles with all sorts of gadgets making noise to underscore their perceived “status”. It is often the case, in particular where ANC mayors and speakers with none or very little formal education, coming from poorly run small town municipalities, are the guilty ones who fit their cars with the most sophisticated equipment for no apparent reason. South African road users are fed-up with this kind of behavior by ANC politicians who daily expose other road users to harm because they can’t manage their personal schedules and forever using the excuse that they are “late for a meeting”. The Congress of the People is calling for the following action: 1. For parliament to review the blue light policy of all government vehicles, and in particular those used by MECs, mayors and speakers. 2. Premiers of all provinces to order MECs, mayors and speakers to observe the law and to discontinue the unnecessary abuse of blue lights and sirens. 3. Rosina Semenya to offer a public apology to the family she caused so much pain and suffering this week. 4. Premier Stanley Mathabatha to order Semenya to pay the medical expenses incurred by the family as a result of her drivers’ blatant disrespect for the safety of other road users. Issued by: J.J.
