COUNTRY COMBINED SENIOR RESULTS/MATCH REPORTS 5th Oct: Canterbury Country wide senior cricket competition got off to an exciting start on Saturday. Veteran Murray Waller and Nick Yannakis on debut added the last 26 runs for a one wicket victory to Sefton over Cheviot in the feature northern fixture. Earlier five wickets for Ross Mathers and a very tidy 2/16 for Mitch Ross, both debutants, played starring roles with the ball as Pete Rayner top scored for Cheviot with a well made 58 batting in the top order. Chris Mulcock was best of the Cheviot bowling attack. Cheviot 160; P Rayner 58, E Anderson 25, Mathers 5/29, Ross 2/16, A Rowe 2/26 lost to Sefton 163/9; A Robinson 31, N Granger 19, M Dwyer 18, C Mulcock 4/24, Other matches produced some bizarre results with Kirwee managing just 17 in reply to an Oxford tally of 122. Mark Hogarth feasted with outstanding figures of 7 for 5. The ultimate carnage was never a prospect early as Jonathon Pulley and Geoff Macfarlane produced an opening partnership of 50. Southbrook overcame Amberley who put up a competitive 182 for 9 in their first senior appearance in over two decades, Mike Tayliss top scored with 61 but Southbrook romped home losing just 3 wickets. Joel Paris finished 60 not out while Ged Robertson took the three wickets to fall. A disappointing aspect from the first round was the default by Rangiora gifting points to Kaiapoi. In matches south of the river, Leeston/Southbridge had a nail biting victory over Diamond Harbour Kaituna. Leeston/Southbridge Captain, Russ Parker top scored with 28 while fellow veteran Dryden Thomson Chipped in with a quick fire 21. However the rest of the batsmen succumbed to the accurate bowling of Bailey Wilkinson 4/22 and Bob Masefield 3/4. Diamond Harbour lost wickets at regular intervals through tidy spells from Tom Wilkinson 3/17 and Andy Rogers 3/24. Opening Batsmen Leighton McEwen scored a patient 30 but when he was trapped LBW off the bowling of Ben Chamberlain, the tail was exposed opening the door for Rogers & Chamberlian to clean up the tail. B Wilkinson 4/22, B Masefield 3/4 Diamond Harbour Kaituna 96; L McEwen 30, T Wilkinson 3/17, B Chamberlain 3/17, A Rogers 3/24 Weedons beat Lincoln courtesy of Paul Rugg dominating with a well made 97. Weedons debutant Chris Smith chipped in with a well compiled 49. Keiran Robinson was the pick of the bowlers with 3/47. In reply Lincoln managed 166. The experienced Richard Clarke lead the charge with 46 and was well supported by Alex Lunn and Arthur Paterson with 31 & 38 respectively. Mike Kingston and Scott lamb were effective with the ball for Weedons. Kingston ended with 4/34 and Lamb 3/40. Weedons228/5; P Rugg 97, C Smith 49, J Watson 29, K Robinson 3/47. Lincoln 166; R Clarke 46, A Paterson 38, A Lunn 31. M Kingston 4/34, 3/40. South Malvern sent out a warning shot about their title credentials with a big win over Greendale. Lead by a James Ferris 108, and backed up by Paddy Readon with 60 and Mike Pauling 31, South Malvern were able to score 309/7 off their 45 overs. In reply Greendale only managed to get through to 145. R Wilson top scored with 30. Ferris continued his dominance with the ball taking 3/28.
