COVER PHOTO: My “Eye / Iris / Gaze / Face” series continues Balo’s Gaze: Garima in Mani Kaul’s film “Uski Roti” (1969) HUMAN EYE Mani Kaul’s struggle through his cinematography was to free the camera from the eye, and perhaps that was his objective when he, through his cinematographic practice, moved towards not letting his cameraperson look through the camera. This as he said, was more metaphorical than a technical device. As far as the eye was concerned, he believed that in human body there was nothing more culturally trained than the eye. “It could create instant organization out of any chaotic material and there lies the problem. The notion of order turns out to be nothing more than the visual obsession.” The question was whether random (chaotic) could be really entirely wiped out of our existence that we may live in some symmetrical peace. – Amrit Gangar in his Introduction to “Tribute to Mani Kaul,” program at the 12th Festival of Indian Asian & Arab Cinema, Osian’s Cine Fan, 2012: New Delhi.
