More City Updates regarding the storm! Hang in there everyone. News Release August 8, 2013 CITYWIDE UPDATES Clean-up efforts continue in the wake of the tornado and strong straight line winds that devastated areas of Appleton and the Fox Valley on the early morning of August 7th. The Emergency Operations Center for the City of Appleton remains open and has prepared an update for community members. The American Red Cross opened a shelter/reception center in the City of Appleton, for those affected by yesterday’s storm. Twelve community members used the facility, which is being housed at Appleton West High School (610 N. Badger Ave.) in the Emanuel Gymnasium. The entrance for the shelter/reception center is on N. Badger Avenue (use gym entrance). The Red Cross has no immediate plans to close the facility. The reception center is a short-term facility for those who have lost power and are in need of a place to shower and to recharge medical equipment and electronic devices. Facility users will need to bring their own toiletry items and towels. The Appleton Police Department reports no storm or power outage related issues overnight. We ask community members to continue to work together and to keep an eye out for suspicious activity in areas affected by power outages and storm damage. We also ask that citizens continue to check on the welfare of those who may be ill, aged or may require assistance. Contact the Appleton Police Department at 920-832-5500 if the individual’s welfare needs to be checked. Drivers are asked to avoid areas affected by power outages and storm damage, as many intersections and railroad crossings normally controlled by electronic signals, are still without power. The Appleton Fire Department reminds property owners to check the batteries in their smoke alarms, refrain from using gas grills inside a residence, run generators outside of buildings and don’t overload extension cords. Sump-pumps should be checked to ensure they are operational and safety considerations around electric sources should be kept in mind. Appleton Fire Department officials are continuing to collect property damage information directly related to the storm. City of Appleton residents are asked to provide that information to 920-832-5813. Community members, who are using generators to power their residence, should use caution if they are directly feeding their electrical system. The Appleton Department of Public Works has encouraged residents who have yard debris (trees, branches, etc.), to bring the debris directly to one of the two yard waste sites in the city (2625 E. Glendale Ave. and 701 S. Whitman Ave.). The facilities will be open today between 9AM and 6:45PM. Residents who have damage to trees on the city terrace, that are not creating an immediate problem, should contact the Department of Public works at 920-832-5580. Crews from the Appleton Department of Public Works are continuing to clear fallen and damaged trees throughout the city. They will start picking up branches and trees in some areas of the city. From a personal safety perspective, the city is asking people to avoid climbing into trees on the terrace or cutting limbs from those trees. The City Health Department is providing additional information on their Facebook site regarding food safety for those individuals who have been without power for the past two days. The information can be found at appleton.org/i/d/health/food_safety_after_a_power_outage.pdf As of 6:30AM, WE Energies is reporting 12,434 customers in the City of Appleton who are without power. WE Energies continues to work diligently to restore power to affected community members. They are currently forecasting that 90% of Fox Valley customers will have power restored by 6PM on Friday, August 9, 2013. The City of Appleton encourages community members to follow the various city departments at their individual Facebook sites and Twitter sites. We will provide updates to those sites as further information is received or required. For additional information please contact Sgt. Lund at 832-5509 or 419-5180.
