CROSSVIEWS: Momentum for Saturday, March 15, 2014 – ARTIFICIAL WALNUT – Fifty years ago I asked a specialist in food research if it was conceivable that an artificial walnut could be created that would have the exact properties of a real walnut. The answer was that it was within the realm of possibilities and potentially could be done so that by definition there would be no difference between the real one and the manufactured one. Yet, when they would both be put in the ground one would grow and the other would rot. Missing in the manufactured one would be life; that cannot be made by science or accidental chance. Thirty years ago I asked a Bible class I was teaching what was different about a man who had just died and a living man. The class was about one half medical people including some doctors who were leaders in their fields. I was not prepared for their answer – “There is no difference.” I then listened to a discussion of the properties of life and death! Some of which I didnt understand. The only thing different was life – whatever that is. Apparently life is an undefinable quality of energy that distinguishes a functioning being from inanimate material. It is given by the Holy Spirit of God in creation – the same person and function of the Trinity that also gives spiritual life to spiritually dead (but physically alive) people when they are born again,John 3:5, 6.
