Call for Submission: Master Classes by the film crew of “KAJAKI: The True Story” Subject: The Royal Film Commission - Jordan (RFC) invites you to attend master classes conducted by the film crew of “KAJAKI: The True Story”. Time & Date: Thursday Jan. 8th 2015 – 10:00am to 1:00pm Location: The Film House (RFC), Jabal Amman 1st Circle – 5 Omar Bin el-Khattab St. Master Classes Language: English These master classes target intermediate and advanced filmmakers. Deadline for submissions: 4:00 p.m. January 5th 2015. About the Instructors: Paul Katis (Director/Producer) is an extremely versatile award-winning director with extensive experience in a wide range of genres. He has worked in TV & commercial film production for over 25 years, and in that time has amassed a wealth of credits and experience. After initially editing then producing commercials, he has moved on to direct over 50 commercials before concentrating on longer form production. Katis recently won the Golden Award for Best Director at the Cannes Corporate and Media Awards 2012 for his film, “Choose Life”. He has also won numerous IVCA awards for Best Director, most recently in 2011 for “Exposed” starring rising British actress, Karla Crome. His comedy drama “The Strange Case of Penny Allison”, starring Hugh Laurie and Imelda Staunton, won the UK Industry award for Best Drama in 2002 and “Making it Count in Court” , starring Andrew Lancel and Sita Indrani, earned Katis another Best Drama and Best Directing award in 2004. He won various other industry Best Director awards in 2005, 2001, 2000 and 1998, as well as the Gold Camera Award for Direction at the 1995 US International Film and Video awards in New York and the Silver in 1996. Katis’s short film “Starting Over” was selected for the Kodak short film showcase and was shortlisted for a BAFTA before being broadcast by Channel Four. “KAJAKI: The True Story” is Katis’ first venture into narrative films and he is very excited by the prospect of telling this story. Erik Rehl (Production Designer) has been designing for narrative films, TV, commercials, photo shoots, fashion shows and events for ten years, which include Oscar winning and BAFTA nominated work that has premiered at film festivals such as Berlin, Cannes and London and worked with talents such as Nick Cave, Grace Jones and the Rolling Stones. Rehl designed the directorial debut “The Dog Thrower” for celebrated British writer Jon Ronson starring Matthew Perry from “Friends”, and short films with Chiwetel Ejiofor, Romola Garai, Rosamund Pike, Sara Kestelman and David Tenant. He also art directed Martin McDonagh’s 2006 Oscar winning live action short film, “Six Shooter”, starring Brendan Gleeson and an exploding cow. Rehl trained at Swarthmore College, the Moscow Arts Theatre, and Central Saint Martin’s College of Art and Design, where he received an MA in Scenography with Distinction. He has worked all over the world and favors Jordan highly for its talented film industry and breath taking locations. Cliff Wallace (Prosthetics) Since making his 1986 debut as a creature designer on Horror writer Clive Barker’s movie “Hellraiser”, Cliff Wallace has worked on over 70 movies as a special effects makeup artist, and worked with many of Hollywood’s finest directors. He was animatronic supervisor for Steven Spielbergs “Warhorse” and a lead creature designer for Guillermo Del Toros “Hellboy 2: The Golden Army”. He was prosthetic designer for Sir Ridley Scotts war movie “Black Hawk Down” and his epic Crusades movie “Kingdom of Heaven”. A longtime collaborator with director Danny Boyle, Wallace helped redefine the zombie movie with “28 Days Later” and also created the mind-bending effects for Boyles latest movie “Trance”, as well as supplying effects for the directors national theatre production of Mary Shelleys “Frankenstein”. His latest work includes Brad Pitt’s Second World War drama “Fury” and the forthcoming AMC miniseries “Knifeman”. Wallace has also supplied effects to many TV series including the BBCs long running Sci- Fi franchise “Doctor Who” and the forthcoming medical drama “Critical”, as well as numerous award winning commercials. His startling promo work includes landmark videos for The Aphex Twin, Massive Attack, Robbie Williams and the Manic Street Preachers amongst others. Since 2009, he has exhibited sculptures at numerous galleries throughout the UK, Europe and the United States. He was a museum curator at “The Makeup Artist” Magazine Tradeshow for ten years and curated an exhibition of work by the world’s leading makeup effects for the Colgne Art Fair. He is the author of numerous magazine articles for Amazing Figure Modeller and Makeup Artist Magazine and has written short fiction for Fear and Frighteners magazines and published his fantasy novel, “The Third Realm” in 2012. Wallace rates working on “KAJAKI: The True Story” in Jordan to be one of the best experiences of his professional career and is hugely proud of the finished movie. Dan Gibling (1st Assistant Director), Gibling has worked his way up the Assistant Director ranks for 8 years, from floor runner through a series of 3rd AD / 2nd AD credits on a huge variety of projects with top talent such as Ian McKellen and Marion Cotillard, to now being a 1st Assistant Director on feature films, TV dramas, music videos and commercials. In music videos, Dan has steered the ship for multi-award winning directors to create videos for the likes of One Direction, Michael Buble, Sinead O’Conner, Franz Ferdinand and many others. In commercial work he is known for his technical car stunt work with Audi and Seat as well as ADing the Royal Mail’s launch campaign and xmas adverts. Kajaki is Dan’s 3rd full length feature film as 1st AD and the first to take him to the desert to film. As a founding member of the Assistant Directors Association and organiser of The Floor Runners Bootcamp, Dan believes strongly in gaining an understanding of every aspect of film production through an ethos of ‘earning your stripes’ and is always keen to train up those new to the craft of ADing.
