Callie House, a seamstress and laundress born into slavery in 1861 headed a 30 year campaign to secure pensions for former slaves. A mother of five, House went on to fight for pensions based on those offered to Union soldiers, brilliantly targeting $68 million in taxes on seized rebel cotton and demanding it as repayment for centuries of unpaid labor. The reparations campaign provoked the ire of the U.S. Postal Service, which charged House and her compatriots with mail fraud and subjected them to scrutiny, harassment, and prosecution. #BlackHerstory #BlackGirlsLoveBooks
