Calling out with Trixie Cruz: When asked what cultural community they belong to, they look at you, puzzled, as though interest in their kind is cause for further embarrassment. Bajao lang po kami, they answer. In turn, I am puzzled by the lang that belittles this ancient water people and what appears to be a reason for their shame. For generations, they have been looked down on, oppressed, reduced to penury and begging. They have been considered eyesores by an uneducated people who cannot see the history, the genius of this race. Yet the constitution guarantees the protection of the weakest members of society. We should not suffer this to happen.
