Capital Punishment Capital punishment is an assault on - TopicsExpress

Capital Punishment Capital punishment is an assault on God. Capital punishment is not a deterrent to crime. This is backed by extensive data and studies. A person or a nation condoning capital punishment is in denial of these facts, by ignorance or by choice. The one exacting capital punishment is as much guilty of murder as the sentenced man, though he disguises the murderous nature of the sentence under the guise of ‘legality’. Legalised murder is helping no one. Murders statistics do not go down because of it, but what inevitably diminishes each time we ‘legally’ kill a human being is our own humanity. Each time we pull the trigger or inject the poison, we deny our Oneness with our brother or sister, we deny Boundless Love in our hearts and worst of all, we deny entry to the Love of God in our lives. Moreover, we must remember the crucial fact that our judicial systems are not infallible. Miscarriages of justice are happening everywhere in the world. There are no doubts that many innocent people have been legally sent to their death. This is the worst kind of injustice ever perpetrated against a human being. For that alone, capital punishment should be banished forever. But are we humble enough to recognise our fallibility? We were commanded to love one another and not to kill. These commandments have never been amended. Why do we choose to ignore them when we make the appalling choice of legally killing our brother, when we give in to revenge and when we hide behind the face of religion? Every time we choose this path, we are smothering the light of God in us with our own darkness and even though the Light never goes out, its weak flame cannot guide us anymore. We subsequently easily fall into the trap of righteousness and retribution. Even the tears that God spills at our poor choices fail to rekindle His Divine Light within our hearts. Our voices are divided over the issue of capital punishment. It would be so simple though to speak against it in one voice, if only we would realise that no human being can ever judge another because of our lack of vision. Only God knows exactly the whole truth about each of His children and can very clearly see His own Light in their hearts. He alone understands the origins of the mistakes and even before they are made, He has already forgiven. None of us is blessed with such vision; therefore, let us not attempt to usurp God’s vision. Let us only remember that each time we ‘legally’ kill our brother, we have arrogantly snuffed out a light of God. Let us remember that if the Boundless Love of God would guide us at all times, the thought of ‘legalised’ murder would be unable to enter our hearts. Isa.
