Carolines Daily Prayer: How does the Sacred enter into a persons life? And what does that holy entry feel like? Today, on my last day in Assisi, I visited the mountain where St. Francis received the stigmata - the wounds of Christ. He was the first to experience this mystical phenomenon - an unexplainable cosmic act unlike any other. I walked the grounds of this mountain and the chapel area and then attended a service with Franciscan monks singing Gregorian chants. Hearing Latin again sent me back into the early days of my childhood - learning to pray and sing and read in Latin. How familiar this world is to me...it is my spiritual DNA. As I stood near the monks absorbing the vibrations of their singing, I noticed the others who had gathered. People closed their eyes and listened - wanting to drink in the grace of these monks. No doubt many blended in their own prayers. The Sacred enters us just like that - when we gather to celebrate the beauty or holiness of life - or to hold each other through a sorrowful passage. We are never out of a field of grace but perhaps we need each other to sense it. I was reminded today that praying with others is bliss and all it requires is for you to bless the moment you are sharing with others.
