Catholic Calendar and Daily Meditation Saturday, October 19, 2013 Saturday of the Twenty-eighth Week in Ordinary Time Saints John de Brébeuf and Isaac Jogues, priests and companions, martyrs Scripture from todays Liturgy of the Word: new.usccb.org/bible/readings/101913.cfm Romans 4:13, 16-18 Psalm 105:6-7, 8-9, 42-43 Luke 12:8-12 A reflection on todays Scripture: My God, it grieves me greatly that You are not known, that in this savage wilderness all have not been converted to You, that sin has not been driven from it. Saints John de Brebeuf and Isaac Jogues suffered severe and vicious torture and the mutilation of their bodies -- for Christ, with whom they were consumed and whose love consumed them. Those great Jesuit missionaries were hoping to establish a Christian society, a little Christendom in North America, among the native Huron. For their efforts, they came to the same earthly end as their Master, but joined Him in everlasting glory, which the Church celebrates today. May we be strengthened by their example, to give witness to Christ today, in love, without counting the cost. O God, who chose to manifest the blessed hope of your eternal Kingdom by the toil of Saints John de Brebeuf, Isaac Jogues and their companions and by the shedding of their blood, graciously grant that through their intercession the faith of Christians may be strengthened day by day.
