Chamber News Feed: Morris County, NJ: In Morris County, both students and school staffers are well aware of the importance of recycling and reusing. Four years ago Mendham Elementary School building serviceman Rich Hoagland took note of all the pencils, pens, crayons, etc., that were left on the floor at the end of the day and wondered if there was a better use for them. He enlisted his colleagues, Ralph Puco and Sterry Colvin, to help gather them up. We were astounded by the number of pens and pencils that students were losing track of each day, said Hoagland. We agreed that these tools still had a lot of life left in them, and decided to start collecting them for the kids who cannot afford school supplies. It has become a multi-school program; last year, Black River Middle School student Lisa Gause began doing the same, and even set up a box at school for discarded pens and pencils. This year they will pool their collected supplies and donate them to Black River Middle School eighth grader Kyle Noble, a Global Literacy volunteer who will use the supplies to fill the backpacks for Tiny Tots of New Brunswick. We figure that we’ve collected over 20,000 writing tools off the floors over the past four years, said Colvin. Your Bernards Township Regional Chamber of Commerce Works for You!
