Charles Frederick Cox better known as Fighting Charlie getting fitted for his sheepskin vest in Sydney 1914 and then wearing it at Gallipoli. Cox had already served in the Boer War as commander of the 3rd NSW Mounted Rifles when at the age of 51 he enlisted with the AIF. He was appointed commander of the 6th Light Horse Regiment arriving on Gallipoli on 19 May 1915 only to be wounded by shrapnel two days later. He returned to resume his command on 1 July 1915. On 6 December 1915 he was given command of the 1st Light Horse Brigade, a position he held for the duration of the war.
