Charlies Story. Emma, Charlies mum has kindly shared his story with us. To help someone like Charlie, enrol as a donor text BLOOD to 60081. Or if you would like to get your sports club, school, community group or church involved contact us. My son Charlie was diagnosed aged 7 months with leukaemia . As you can imagine our world as we knew it ended and has never been the same again. Charlie underwent 6 months of gruelling chemotherapy which made him very sick and he needed alot of blood and platelet transfusions. Unfortunately 6 months after Charlies treatment ended he relapsed and the leukaemia returned in his bone marrow and his testicles . He was only 1. His only chance of survival was a bone marrow transplant. A donor was thankfully found and we had to go to Bristol for approximately 4 months for Charlie to have his transplant. There was a lot of chemotherapy before the transplant as all Charlies cells had to be killed to make sure that all the cancer cells were destroyed. Again through out these months Charlie needed a lot of blood and platelets. Thankfully Charlie is now almost 5 years post transplant. T 2 years ago doctors discovered that Charlie is immune suppressed, due to the combination of all the treatment that he needed and his transplant. Charlie now needs to go to hospital every two weeks to receive immunoglobulin, which is also a blood product. Without this Charlie would continuously get infection and would be unable to go to school or play with his cousins/ friends. We could not begin to count all the blood and platelet transfusions that Charlie needed and he would not be here without them. I am now a regular blood donor and have joined the bone marrow register in the hope that I can return some of the blood that kind people gave to Charlie .
