Chester Carlson was studying law, but he was dirt poor. As a result, he found himself sitting in the school library copying the books in long hand. There had to be a better way and he set out to figure out something. I’m sure he was quite popular in the library – he started doing his experiments in one of the small back rooms working with sulfur. Between setting the sulfur on fire and explosions the place must have smelled great. Anyway, on this day, 1938, he got the dang thing to work. What he couldn’t do is find somebody to finance it. He went to IBM, RCA, Kodak, and a bunch others. Nobody could see any use for a gadget that couldn’t do anything but make copies. Well, a little upstart named Xerox took a chance. Carlson had a pal who was working with him for a little while and he gave that guy 100 shares of stock. His buddy thought so little of the concept that he tossed the stocks which would have been worth a million bucks by 1972. The photos show Carlson with his first copier and the first image to be photocopied – got no idea what it is.
