China to build the world’s longest underwater tunnel An elaborate proposal to build the world’s longest #undersea #tunnel will be submitted to the State Council, #China’s #cabinet, within 15 days, the China #Business Journal reported on Saturday. The project aims at connecting the port cities of Dalian, in Liaoning Province, and Yantai, in Shandong Province, through an underwater rail line in the Bohai Sea. At present, the two cities are connected through a 1400-km land round and a ferry service, which takes nearly 8 hours. Once completed, the tunnel would cut the travel time to merely 40 minutes. The 123-kilometer tunnel will cost around 200 billion Yuan (approx. $32.5 billion) to 260 billion Yuan (approx. $42.3 billion). “A blueprint along with 12 subject reports will be submitted to the State Council, in an effort to have the project approved and started by 2020,” Wang Mengshu, head of the project and a tunnel and railway expert with the Chinese Academy of Engineering told the paper. If approved, the tunnel will surpass the combined length of the world’s two longest underwater tunnels – Japan’s #SeikanTunnel and the #ChannelTunnel between Britain and France.
