At forefront of the agitation is the Sarna community, who took out a procession on Tuesday to demand removal of the statue so that ‘locals are not misled’. "Anybody can wear a white sari with red border but making Mother Mary wear it seems to be a tactic to convert the Sarna tribals into Christianity. Mother Mary was a foreigner and showing her as a tribal woman is definitely not correct," Bandhan Tigga, a priest of Sarna society complained. Claiming that ‘Christians’ are trying to confuse the local tribal goddess with ‘foreigner Mary’, Tigga further threw light on the fact that Maa Sarna, or Mother Nature, who is worshipped by locals is depicted in the same attire. “Red border means a lot in Sarna dharm. Our women wear white sari with red border during auspicious times.
