Christmas Eve memory: For the first time, my husband was excited about taking the six-year-old to see Santa. Ray didnt really believe in that, but hed found the perfect Santa. And the six-year-old was so happy. Im going to see Santa, Im going to see Santa, she sang all the way in the car! The three of us practically skipped into the mall, then Ray distracted Mo-Mo as we stood in line. Reaching the front, she was almost trembling with excitement, until....Mo took one look at Santa and screamed! Her scream was so loud and so shrill that every two-legged and four-legged animal within a seventy-five mile radius heard her. Oh, my God, whats wrong? Ray and I asked together. Thats not Santa! she cried. Thats not Santa! she screamed. That is Santa! Ray said. No, its not! Thats not Santa. Santas not black! No matter what we said to that six-year-old, she wouldnt sit on black Santas lap. Finally (after the mall security guards came over to make sure we werent abusing our child) I dragged her out of the mall. She cried all the way home, and she cried that night when I told her that she was right. That wasnt Santa. There was no such thing as Santa! Thats right -- I fixed it so that I would never have to take any child to see Santa again. So from the time she was six, Mo-Mo knew the truth about Santa -- he wasnt black, he wasnt white, he just wasnt! Im sure Mo is fine after all these years, Im still tramautized by that experience......
