Clarence Thomas was nine years of age when he met his father. He had moved to Philadelphia after divorcing Clarence’s mother in 1950. Thomas was raised in a tiny Georgia town called Pinpoint. He was raised by his maternal grandparents. In that meeting with his father, he was surprised by the visit, and felt that his father spoke in a “Shameless voice that carried no remorse for his absence from his life.” Young Clarence was molded by his mother’s father. A dark, strong, proud man, who was determined to mild him in his own image. Clarence Thomas, family tree is derived from the West African Slaves who lived on the barrier islands and in the low country of Georgia,, South Carolina, and coastal Northern Florida. He says in Georgia, his people were called Geeches; in South Carolina, Gullahs. They were isolated from the rest of the population, Black and White alike, and so maintained their distinctive dialect and culture. What little remains of Geechee life is now celebrated by scholars. It was indeed a derogatory term for Negroes in Georgia with distinctive features and accents. Pinpoint, Georgia, is about ten miles from Savannah, and is a heavily wooded twenty-five acre peninsula on Shipyard Creek. This small enclave is full of pines, palms, live oaks, and low hanging Spanish moss, and is seemingly cut off from the rest of the world. Most of the citizens in that small enclave peninsula, raked oysters, caught crabs, or fished at the waters edge for the factory. The Crabs went to the crab house to be cooked, and the oysters were tossed into a bin at the Oyster factory next door. The women shucked oysters in the factory, a cold damp cinderblock building, cracking the shells and pulling out the oysters, talking and singing as they worked. This young man, was born and raised in an unforgiving environment. Why then is he unable to realize the uniqueness of his existence? Why then is he able to support the negative aspects of a Tea Party or Racist Conservative support group? More to follow, and additional questions to raise. His seat on the Supreme Court, does not reflect a person who is aware of his surroundings, or even the community at large. Many have called for his impeachment. Is it because he is such a failure, or is it because he has no awareness of who he is and who he represents on the High Court?
