Code of a Killer starring John Simm: ITV film crew shoot in Leicester for two part drama on how DNA profiling snared double-child killer. An ITV film crew was in Leicester [last Thursday], shooting for a new two part drama about double-child killer Colin Pitchfork - and the invention of DNA profiling which snared him. ‘Code of a Killer’ is a two-hour film, set to be screened over two parts on ITV next year. It tells the story of how local baker Colin Pitchfork senselessly murdered two Leicestershire school girls - Lynda Mann and Dawn Ashworth - and how he was brought to justice by a local scientist who developed a new genetic finger printing test. Pitchfork, of Littlethorpe, was jailed for life in January, 1988. The story of how he was caught made headlines around the world. The new drama has been made with the approval of the victims’ families. It has been shot on location in Leicester and London this autumn. Yesterday, the crew set up in the Adrian Building at the University of Leicester, using the same lab where scientist Sir Alec Jeffreys made his life-changing discovery. Actor John Simm - who played Sam Tyler in Life of Mars and The Master on Dr Who - is playing Sir Alec. “I hadn’t met him until last night,” he said. “I’ve been watching old film clips, reading old newspaper archives.
